VJC holds carnival to celebrate family tiesPosted: 11 November 2006 2007 hrs
SINGAPORE: Victoria Junior College (VJC) held a Family Tree Carnival to celebrate the importance of the family. Student reporters from the school captured the event on a news clip which was submitted for MediaCorp News' Roving DV programme. Selected clips received will be shown on News5 Tonight/Singapore Tonight - and five finalists will be announced in January 2007. One of them will win our ROVING DV 2006 Award and a SONY HD Handycam. Fun, warmth and family are the elements that made up the atmosphere at the one-day Family Tree Carnival at VJC, which was organised in collaboration with Singapore Action Group of Elders (SAGE). The event saw the gathering of three generations to raise funds for SAGE. Mrs Chan Khak Gek, Principal of VJC, said: "Mainly, it's to bring the different generations and age groups together to have fun, to have games and to just play together, and I think we've really succeeded." Elderly and children from various organisations visited the college and were given a guided tour by the Victorians. Amongst the highlights of the events were the food, games and the performances put up by the students. A special duet performance was put up by Hong Sheng, a 17-year-old student, together with his grandmother. "It's a time when all of us regardless of our different age groups get together and participate in a community event where everyone feels involved, so no one actually feels left out," said Mansoor Amir, a VJC student. Student-reporter,
Juliana, ended off the news clip with the following insight: "While Singapore continues to strive to achieve first-world status, we must not forget that the basic building block of a society is still that of a family." - CNA/so
